In 2001, Honeoye Lake had core samples taken to determine the nature of the bottom sediments. This study provides input as to the value or lack of value over cost of dredging Honeoye Lake.

Over 30 core samples were taken and the depth of the core samples dated back to approximately 1685. The core samples were 20" in depth. The measured available phosphorus and total phosphorus increased deeper in the core samples by 20 percent. Because of this, dredging the lake likely would only expose higher concentrations of available and total phosphorus. The study highlights potential solutions that are remarkably the same as those documented in the NYS TMDL study released in 2019. This study also comments on the benefits/lack of benefits of weed harvesting.
